“Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the darkest of them all?”

This sentiment is a re-appropriation of the phrase, first made popular by The Brothers Grimm in their fairy tale Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs where the Evil Queen mutters these famous words directly to her mirror: “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?”

“Fair” is an archaic word for beautiful. Darkness is symbolic of many different things. When you stand in front of this mirror today, what does the word “darkest” conjure up for you? As a contemporary interpretation, this piece reflects beyond issues of race and touches on the psychology and the emotional associations related to darkness.
